Trump’s Favorite Irish Proverb is Neither Irish Nor a Proverb

WASHINGTON, March 16, 2017—Donald Trump welcomed Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny to the U.S. Capitol at the annual “Friends of Ireland” luncheon Thursday by sharing his “favorite Irish proverb.” The piece he subsequently quoted is neither Irish nor a proverb.

“Always remember to forget,

The friends that proved untrue,

But never forget to remember,

Those that have stuck to you.”

The piece Trump quotes is part of a poem called “Remember to Forget,” written by Albashir Adam Alhassan, a Nigerian Muslim.

Either Trump’s staff is woefully incompetent, or someone in the office is trolling him.
