Trump Accuses Iraq War Vets of Stealing Millions
WASHINGTON, June 14, 2016—Donald Trump has once again proven that he is no champion of veterans. In a rally Tuesday night, Trump accused U.S. soldiers of stealing millions of dollars in cash intended for reconstruction projects in Iraq.
“Iraq, crooked as hell. How about bringing baskets of money, millions and millions of dollars, and handing it out?,” said Trump to supporters at a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. “I want to know who were the soldiers that had that job, because I think they’re living very well right now, whoever they may be.”
Trump was presumably talking about the 115 U.S. military officers and personnel convicted of over $50 million worth of bribery, theft and contract-rigging crimes during deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a report by the Center for Public Integrity.
Trump, who has claimed to be a defender of U.S. soldiers and a strong supporter military veterans, had to be shamed into distributing the money he collected at his January 2016 fundraiser for veterans in May. The presumptive Republican Party nominee made the statement Tuesday night at a rally about 90 miles from Fort Bragg, one of the country’s largest military bases.
